Today you are going to explore the biggest town in the western Oromia Region of Ethiopia which is called Nekemte. Nekemte is the capital of the former Wollaga Province and is home to a museum of Wollega Oromo culture.
It is the burial place of Onesimus Nesib, a famous Oromo who translated the Bible into the Oromo Language for the first time, in collaboration with Aster Ganno.
Nekemte is also the capital of the Kumsa Moroda Kingdom of Wollega in the 19th century. Dejazmach Kumsa Moroda was the last King of Wollega and an independent kingdom until 1892. This historic palace was constructed in Nekemte during the reign of this king by using a large proportion of local material and labor. The beauty of craftsmanship seen in the building of the palace and its long life illustrates the knowledge and skill of local people developed at that time.
