What is Preposition

A preposition is a short word that is employed in sentences to show the relationship nouns, pronouns or phrases have with other parts within the respective sentences.

The prepositions “in,” “at,” and “on” are used to indicate time in English. They can be tricky because they don’t always translate directly to other languages.

“In” is used for longer periods of time

  • The largest, most general periods.
  • Centuries: 21st ,20th, 19th,… ,
  • Decades: years in 2025, in 2024, in 2023…,
  • Seasons: in the spring, in the winter, in the summer, in the autumn,
  • Months: January, February, March, April, ….,
  • Parts of day: in the morning, in the afternoon,
  • Longer periods: in the past, in the future, in a few weeks

Examples

  • She was born in 1990.
  • We go skiing in the winter.
  • I like to read in the evening.
  • The flowers bloom in the spring.
  • I love to swim in the summer.

“On” is used for days and dates

  • The more specific periods.
  • Days of week: on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, …
  • Dates: on January 8th , on July 17th, on my birthday, …
  • Specific days + parts of day: on Monday morning, on Friday evening….
  • Holidays with “day”: on Christmas day, on new year’s day….

Examples

  • The party is on Saturday.
  • His birthday is on June 15th.
  • I’ll see you on Tuesday morning.

“At” is used for the most specific times

  • The most specific time:
  • Specific time: at 3:00PM, at 11:00AM, at 6:30PM…
  • Mealtimes: at breakfast, at lunch, at dinner
  • Night: at night
  • The weekend: at the weekend(BE, on the weekend(AE
  • Specific points in time: at the moment, at the same time, at the age of 25….

Examples

  • I’ll meet you at 5 o’clock.
  • We eat dinner at 7 pm.
  • She always goes to church at Christmas.
